Highland Water — Privacy Policy
Effective July 24, 2026. Policy text revised October 1, 2026.
Highland Water shows live Highland Lakes water conditions. It is built to need as little of your data as possible.
What we collect
The app does not require an account. It does not include advertising or analytics tracking. Optional features send the information described below to our API, hosted on Netlify.
On iOS, if notifications are authorized and Apple provides a push token, the app sends that device token, the push environment, your home lake selection, and a flood-notification preference to our server. The server stores these values with registration and update timestamps for notification delivery. The token is a device identifier, not a guarantee of anonymity. Remote delivery depends on service configuration and availability.
Your home lake and dock elevation are saved on your device. On iOS, the home lake is also included in push registration. Android 1.0.0 does not register push tokens or send its home lake selection; alerts are shown inside the app. If you enter a dock elevation, the app includes it in requests to our API to calculate shoreline recommendations. It is not exclusively on-device data.
Location (optional)
If you tap the location button on the basin map, iOS asks for permission and your position appears on the map. The app uses your location for the map position display and does not include coordinates in requests to our Highland Water API. Maps, search, and directions use Apple services under Apple's privacy terms. You can browse lake conditions without location permission; the location display requires permission.
Android 1.0.0 does not request location permission or collect coordinates. Lake and ramp map searches open your chosen map application or browser with the place name. That provider processes the search and any location you choose to share under its own privacy terms.
Saved conditions on your device
The Android app saves the last successful conditions snapshot on your device for offline viewing. It displays the saved update time. Home lake and dock preferences remain on the device until you clear the app data or uninstall it; a dock elevation is also sent to our API when set, as described above.
If you report a ramp correction
A correction sends the ramp identifier, lake identifier, reported status, and your note to our server. The server adds a report identifier and timestamp. The current app form does not ask for contact details, but notes can contain personal information and the API accepts optional contact details for follow-up. Avoid including sensitive information in notes. Corrections are intended for operator review, not a public discussion feed.
Data sources
Lake, river, rainfall, and flood data come from public sources: LCRA Hydromet (provisional), USGS, the National Weather Service, and the Texas Water Development Board. Hosting and Apple services may process technical request information to operate their services. This policy does not promise that network requests leave no logs. For questions about submitted information or requests to remove it, contact us below.
Editorial access
The separate web editor is restricted to authorized publishers. We store editor names or email addresses, hashed access keys, and private session records to manage access. The editor website uses a secure sign-in cookie. Sessions expire after 30 minutes of inactivity or eight hours, and sign-out invalidates the session. Editorial revisions record who saved them and when. Article and quote content marked for publication is public; drafts are private. The owner can revoke editor access. Ordinary app readers do not need an editor account.
